They never cease to amaze, these Super Tuscans. I met two in my hotel here at Vinitaly. They need no introduction: Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri, Italy. Ring a bell? Sassicaia – the Super Tuscan by definition.

These people not only make Sassicaia (they invented it, for Pete’s sake!), but they also make superb Sardinian wines. I visited them at their Vinitaly stand on Tuesday,
and enjoyed sipping some of their special products. I tried the white Samas and the red Montessu, both Isola dei Nuraghi IGT.

Extremely hospitable and open, guess what they had me try from this unmarked bottle (answer below):
But my tour through Tuscany didn’t end here. In fact, I met with other Super Tuscan women throughout the day.
Here I am with Donatella Cinelli Colombini, Vice President of the Donne del Vino or Women of Wine Association. This lady makes one mean Brunello!!! And she loves her terroir, promoting all the products, including the lovely cheese you see on the cutting board there.

Then I moved on to Castello Sonnino, where I tasted the gamut from their unique Leone Rosso, to the Castello di Montespertoli Chianti DOCG Riserva.
The San Leone is blend that includes merlot, sangiovese and petit verdot – a spicy, full bodied red that is quite satisfying. I even sampled their exquisite Vin Santos. What was I saying about Tuscan hospitality?

The creativity, inventiveness, warmth and uniqueness of Tuscany is in every bottle.
Mille grazie, amici toscani!!!
